Autumn comes early at Kaviar Forge & Gallery with ‘Fall of the Leaf’ exhibit

Although we have more than three more weeks until the official start of autumn, Kaviar Forge & Gallery is jumping the gun with its latest show solely focused on the most beautiful season of the year.

“Fall of the Leaf,” which opens Friday, Aug. 31, features 25 artists from three states who explore the same themes — autumn, change, transition, beauty. Nature’s last hurrah before the dormancy and chill of winter, the season is known for its vivid hues, textures and sounds — crunching, colorful leaves, vibrant and abundant gourds.

“The beauty of autumn is not only in the spectacular colors of the changing trees. I find the upcoming season to be poetic and bittersweet,” Kaviar Gallery Manager Kayla Bischoff tells Insider. “There is a quiet somberness in the air as summer has come to an end, and the vibrant leaves will inevitably fall. I feel more present and thankful during this time. Autumn reminds me to savor each moment.”

Bischoff and the gallery owner Craig Kaviar put out a call for artists earlier this year for the show, and they received lots of interest from artists near and far.

Bischoff says it was difficult narrowing down the number to 25, and this particular show was open to all artists, although most are local.

The 27 pieces in the show represent various media — from painting, drawing, metalwork and mixed media to fiber, printmaking, photography, ceramics, glass and digital art.

Participating artists include Billy Hertz, Fran Redmon, Bill Whorrall, Elizabeth Clare Taylor, Kim Mahlbacher, Sylvia Mancuso Brestel and Tomas Howie, among others.

And the subject matter varies, as you’d expect, but it’s all linked by the common theme of celebrating the season. Some feature fall’s foliage, while others showcase migrating geese and even the season’s sweet treat, candy corn.

Bischoff says she’s proud to show off such a talented group of artists.“I’m most looking forward to the way the artworks will contrast and complement each other,” she says. “These artists offer a variety of perspectives on the celebration of autumn.”

“Fall of the Leaf” opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31. The show continues through Oct. 13. Kaviar Forge & Gallery is located at 147 Stevenson Ave. in Clifton.
